"First things first. If we're going to take the dogs, we need to put the cap back on the truck. Nah, don't worry about closing the door. They'll stay inside. Whoa! Hey, you two! Now come on! How can I tighten these clamps with you sitting right in the way?"

We started the morning out planning to drive up the rez to Salt Lake Canyon. Only thing was that we couldn't find the road. The only one that seems to head up that way is gravel, but there's a turn-around spot covered with large arcs of black rubber. Most people who come this far seem to turn around. Hmmm... We should get a map before heading up this way. Let's head back and see if we can find that lake we saw the sign for.

Remember that mound that seemingly rose from nowhere? Well, it really comes almost right out of Lake Talkalai, which really isn't much of a lake right now. I wonder if "monsoon season" will fill it up a bit more?

Even being this close, those saguaro don't show up particularly well, do they?

[Lake Talkalai]

Upstream from the lake; more of that babbling brook stuff. Can you hear it?

Just think... only 30 miles downstream is the Coolidge Dam, generating megawatts of electricity... certainly not from this little trickle.

[San Carlos River]

And then shot from the same place, but looking downstream.

If we still had the trusty ol' Bronco, I wouldn't think twice about it, but with this truck? I don't think so!
Looks like we'll be heading back the way we came, which is visible in the previous shot. Did you notice the road going up the side of the hill?

[Ford not suited to
Dodge ;-)]

I'm sure we'll be able to get even closer to plenty of cacti later on, but this guy standing watch all by himself was kind of interesting.
